Understanding Share of Voice in AI Search

Your organic search share of voice has nothing to do with your AI search share of voice. Here is what AI SOV actually measures, how to calculate it, what good looks like by industry, and why it is the metric your board will eventually ask for.

Understanding Share of Voice in AI Search

What AI search Share of Voice means — and what it doesn't

In traditional search, Share of Voice measures your brand's share of total impressions or clicks relative to the full category. The metric maps cleanly to a list of blue links — your brand gets some, competitors get some, and the math is straightforward.

AI search works differently. Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot do not return a ranked list. They generate a synthesized paragraph — sometimes one or two sentences, sometimes a full comparison — that may or may not include your brand name, alongside one or two competitors. The user gets an answer, not a menu.

AI search Share of Voice measures the percentage of category-relevant AI-generated answers that include your brand, relative to the total mentions across your tracked competitor set. It is citation rate normalized against competitive context. A 25% citation rate sounds decent in isolation; a 25% citation rate while your primary competitor sits at 60% tells a completely different story.

One thing it does not measure: quality of mentions. SOV tells you frequency. It does not tell you whether AI is describing you as the recommended option or as the cautionary tale. That requires a separate sentiment or entity score metric, which PromptGap tracks alongside SOV. For boardroom-level reporting, you typically want both numbers side by side — SOV plus average sentiment framing.

How to calculate your AI search SOV

The formula is simple. The execution is where most teams stumble.

AI Search Share of Voice

(Your brand citations ÷ Total citations across tracked brands) × 100

Working example: you track 20 queries across Perplexity and ChatGPT Search. Your brand appears in 8 of those responses. Your top two competitors appear in 12 and 9 responses respectively. Total citations across all three brands: 29. Your SOV = 8 ÷ 29 = 27.6%.

The tricky part is consistent execution. AI models are non-deterministic — they give different answers to the same query run at different times, from different locations, or with slightly different phrasing. If you run queries manually on Monday and again three weeks later, you are not measuring a trend — you are measuring noise. This is why PromptGap standardizes the execution environment and runs your full query set on a fixed weekly schedule. The resulting week-over-week comparison is meaningful because the measurement conditions are identical.

Calculate SOV per platform, not just in aggregate. Your Perplexity SOV and your ChatGPT Search SOV will often differ significantly. One brand might hold 40% SOV on Perplexity while sitting at 12% on ChatGPT Search for the same query set. Aggregating those into a single number masks a critical strategic difference in where and how you are winning.

Industry benchmarks for AI search SOV

Benchmarks vary by category maturity, competitive density, and how established the brands in your set are. The numbers below come from PromptGap data across active customers tracking their query sets weekly.

Category Bottom 25% Median Top performers
SaaS / B2B Software Under 8% 18–25% 45%+
Consumer Products (CPG) Under 5% 12–18% 35%+
Financial Services Under 6% 14–20% 38%+
E-commerce / Retail Under 7% 15–22% 40%+
Professional Services Under 10% 20–30% 50%+

A few things these numbers reveal. First, AI search SOV is genuinely winnable for non-dominant brands. Top performers in most categories are not just the market leaders — they are often second or third players who invested in GEO early. Second, the gap between bottom-quartile and top performers is large enough to be a real competitive moat. A brand at 5% SOV is almost irrelevant in the AI-driven discovery journey; a brand at 40% is a default option.

Why SOV matters more than citation rate alone

Citation rate measures your absolute performance. It tells you how often you appear. SOV measures your competitive position. It tells you whether you are keeping pace, falling behind, or pulling ahead relative to the competitors your buyers are also evaluating.

Consider two scenarios. In the first, your citation rate rises from 20% to 30% over a quarter. In the second, your top competitor's citation rate rises from 20% to 45% in the same period. Your citation rate improved, but your SOV collapsed. You are showing up more — and winning less ground against the brand your buyers are comparing you against.

SOV also catches competitive threats that citation rate hides. A new entrant who rapidly builds AI authority in your category shows up in your SOV data before it shows up in your pipeline. A single competitor who goes from 15% SOV to 35% SOV in 90 days is doing something worth analyzing — they changed their content, earned new authority sources, or both. PromptGap surfaces which sources they are getting cited from so you can respond rather than react six months later.

Grüns grew their AI search Share of Voice from 2.0% to 12.6% in 60 days by using PromptGap's weekly SOV tracking to identify specific citation gaps on Perplexity and Gemini and targeting those gaps with fresh content. Weekly measurements let them attribute each SOV jump to a specific content or authority action.

Reporting AI SOV to leadership

Most executives already understand SOV as a concept from brand and media buying — it is the percentage of category impressions or mentions your brand owns. That familiarity works in your favor when introducing AI search SOV to a leadership team.

The frame that tends to land well in board settings: AI search is replacing a portion of the category research buyers used to do via Google. In our category, an estimated X% of evaluation-stage searches now happen through Perplexity, ChatGPT, or Google AI Overviews. Our current SOV on those platforms is Y%. That means we appear in roughly Y% of AI-driven category evaluations. The benchmark for our category is Z%. Here is the gap, and here is the 90-day plan to close it.

The specific numbers you need for that conversation: your current SOV per platform, your top two competitors' SOV, and the category median benchmark. PromptGap generates that report automatically. For a monthly executive summary, three data points plus a 12-week trend chart is sufficient — leadership does not need to know which individual queries moved, only whether the overall direction is right.

One thing to avoid: leading with citation rate as a primary metric in leadership reporting. Most executives will ask "what does that compare to?" and you will need to calculate SOV on the spot. Start with SOV, anchor it to a competitor benchmark, then use citation rate as the supporting detail that explains the mechanism.

Tracking SOV with PromptGap

SOV is only useful as a trend metric. A single snapshot tells you where you stand today; a weekly series tells you whether the trajectory is moving in the right direction. Manual SOV tracking — running queries yourself, counting mentions, building spreadsheets — breaks down quickly at any meaningful query volume.

PromptGap automates the full SOV calculation cycle. You define your query set (typically 15–30 prompts), select your competitor set (typically 3–5 brands), and PromptGap runs the complete set weekly across all four AI platforms. The output includes:

  • SOV per platform (Perplexity, ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot)
  • Competitor SOV on the same query set, updated weekly
  • SOV trend over the past 12 weeks with delta callouts
  • Which queries drove the largest SOV changes week-over-week
  • Source breakdown — which third-party pages are generating your competitor citations

That last item — the source breakdown — is the one most teams use most heavily. When a competitor's SOV jumps by 8 percentage points in a single week, it is almost always traceable to one or two specific new source citations: a press placement, a G2 review surge, or a new comparison page. Knowing the source tells you what to replicate.

"I showed the board our AI SOV trend line alongside our organic SOV trend line at the Q1 review. The organic line was stable. The AI SOV line had dropped from 28% to 14% over six months while we weren't watching. That slide got us the budget we needed for AEO investment faster than anything else we had tried."

The credit-based pricing model in PromptGap means SOV tracking scales with your actual usage rather than locking you into an annual seat cost. A team tracking 20 queries weekly across 4 platforms spends around $40–60 per month in credits. That is a reasonable line item for a metric that goes directly into board-level brand reporting.
