The AEO Action Plan: From Invisible to Recommended in Six Weeks

Why six weeks — and why it works

AI search citation is not a one-day fix, but it is also not a 12-month SEO campaign. The refresh cadence of models like Perplexity Sonar and Gemini means that structural changes to your content and authority footprint show up in citation rates within two to four weeks. Six weeks gives you enough time to execute, wait for re-indexing, and measure a meaningful delta.

Brands that complete this framework with PromptGap as their measurement layer have moved from sub-10% citation rates to 35–50% citation rates on their highest-value query clusters within the six-week window. The framework is structured so each phase compounds the one before it.

Week 1: Baseline audit — know exactly where you stand

Before you write a single word of content, run a PromptGap brand audit. This gives you a quantified baseline across four dimensions:

Citation Rate

% of tracked queries where your brand appears. Most brands start at 5–20% on their best platform.

Share of Voice

Your citations vs. top-3 competitors on the same query set. Shows the gap you need to close.

Entity Completeness

How accurately AI describes your brand when it does cite you. Vague descriptions = entity gap.

Source Coverage

How many unique third-party pages about you have been cited. Low = authority gap.

Also use Week 1 to define your query set. Choose 10–20 prompts that represent the exact searches a buyer in your category would run. These become your tracking set for the full six weeks.

PromptGap tip

Set up Scheduled Probes in PromptGap to automatically re-run your query set every week. You will get notified when your citation rate changes, which competitor replaced you, and which sources they are using that you are not.

Weeks 2–3: Close the content gaps

Your PromptGap audit tells you exactly which queries you are missing from and which competitors are appearing instead. For each gap query, analyze what the cited page does that yours does not. The most common content fixes in this phase:

  1. Entity page rewrite — If your product page uses marketing language instead of definitional language, rewrite it to establish your category, differentiation, use case fit, and named features clearly.
  2. Comparison and alternative pages — Create "[Your Brand] vs [Competitor]" pages for your top 2–3 named competitors. These directly answer the evaluation prompts AI users ask most.
  3. Category definition guides — Publish a "What is [your category]?" page. AI platforms cite category-defining content from vendors when it is more complete than what third parties have written.
  4. FAQ schema additions — Add FAQ schema markup to every page targeting a query in your tracking set. This directly improves AI Overview and ChatGPT Search citation probability.

Weeks 4–5: Build third-party authority

Content on your own site is necessary but not sufficient. The highest-leverage authority plays in this phase:

01

Review platform push

Run a 3-week review request campaign targeting G2, Capterra, and Trustpilot. Aim for a minimum of 10 new reviews within the window. Perplexity citation probability increases significantly at the 10-review recency threshold.

02

Targeted media placements

Secure 2–3 editorial mentions in vertical trade publications or high-DA tech media. A single placement in a publication like TechCrunch, G2 News, or a relevant industry blog can shift your ChatGPT Search citation rate measurably.

03

Directory and aggregator presence

Submit to or update listings in the top 3–5 directories in your category. For SaaS: Product Hunt, Capterra, AlternativeTo. For CPG: industry databases and retail aggregators. These pages act as corroborating signals for the model.

Week 6: Measure, compare, and plan the next cycle

Pull a fresh PromptGap report on your full query set and compare it to your Week 1 baseline. For each metric, calculate the delta:

  • Citation Rate: which queries moved, by how much, and on which platforms
  • Share of Voice: did you narrow the gap on your top-3 competitors
  • New source citations: which of your new third-party pages have been cited
  • Entity description quality: is AI describing you more accurately and specifically

The Week 6 review is also where you identify the next cycle's focus. Typically, one platform will show stronger response than others — double down there while maintaining the content cadence established in Weeks 2–3.

"After six weeks with the PromptGap framework, we went from appearing in 8% of our tracked AI queries to 44%. The entity page rewrite was the single biggest lever — that alone moved the needle before we even touched the authority-building phase."
